Crete Island, the Agean Miracle

Crete is the largest island in Greece and the 5th largest in Mediterranean sea, 260 km long and 12 to 60 km wide. It was inhabited before 190.000 years ago and all civilizations have left their signs. It was always an important island due to its strategic position. It has a very rich history. The climate is very good all year round. It is one of the islands with the richest flora in the world without any dangerous species. There are a lot of natural beauties and the beaches are magnificent with clear waters without any dangerous animals.

1. Knossos - Archaelogical Museum - Heraklion

Be careful not to get lost in the maze of the oldest and the largest archaeological site in Europe, the palace of Knossos with the magnificent monumental buildings. Looking for the Minotaur you will learn about the Minoan civilization 4.000 years old when the rest of Europe lived in caves.
The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is the second largest in Greece and one of the 10 most important museums in the world. It has over 15.000 exhibits and covers a period of more than 5.500 years.

Heraklion is the largest castle in Mediterranean with a 7.000 meters long fortification walls, that took over a century to be built. Walking around with your professional guide you will see the signs of all the civilizations that passed through the island during all times. You will learn one of the secrets of Greeks longevity. You will taste olive oil and feel the energy that is hidden in it. Archanes is a beautiful traditional wine village which has very high growth rate. You can enjoy a lunch with traditional tastes or have a coffee under the trees in the nice square in the center of the village.

3. Lassithi Plateau - Krassi - Diktaion Antron - Kera Monastery

You will enjoy the route all the way to Psichro through the traditional villages in Lassithi Plateau. On this journey you will discover why Zeus loves and protects Crete. Diktaion antron is a sacred place, the cave where Rea gave birth to Zeus. From the village Psichron you can walk uphills for about 15 – 20 minutes or you can ride a donkey to get to the cave. Entrance fee €6, reduced €3 per person (not included).
You can have a coffee in Krasi under the 2.500 years old plane tree. You can have lunch with traditional food in any of the traditional villages of Lassithi Plateau. Kera monastery with the miraculous painting of Virgin Mary is worth visiting. Entrance fee €2 per person (not included). If the program allows, you will have the chance to play with clay, as the ancient Minoans made their pottery.

4. Spinalonga - Agios Nikolaos - Kritsa - Kera Church

A visit to the Lepers’ island, the island of Spinalonga is an experience you can’t miss. You will see an island fortified from the ancient times, used from all the conquerors of the island of Crete. Ιn the 20th century was used to isolate people suffering from Hansen’s disease.
The picturesque gulf with the beautiful fishermans’ villages of Plaka and Elounda make this tour an experience full of nice scenery for unforgettable memories. You can enjoy the unique fish of the Cretan sea in any of the taverns by the sea.

5. Gortys - Festos - Matala

Gortys is a city built in the ancient times. It was the capital of Crete during the Roman times giving a lot of evidence of life in that period. Visiting this place you will feel excited because it is the most important monument in the world for the international law system.
Festos palace is the second most important Minoan palace, worth visiting after Knossos. Built 4.000 years ago. The famous mystery Disc of Festos, that hasn’t been decoded yet, was found here.
Let’s go back in 60s and see where the Hippies lived and expressed their ideas. Visiting Matala you will enjoy the nice clean water of south Crete and eat fresh fish from the Libyan sea.

6. Arkadi - Eleutherna - Margarites - Rethimno

Arkadi is a historical monastery that played a very important role in the liberation from Turks of whole Greece.
Explore Margarites the traditional village with a lot of pottery shops working clay like Minoans did. Wander in the lovely narrow streets and admire the extraordinary architecture with the Venetian doorways and the Byzantine churches.
Find out why Eleutherna is declared by the Archaeological Institute of America one of the 10 most important discoveries. You will feel very excited entering in the museum of Eleutherna directly linked to the nearby archaeological site.
Explore Rethimno the third largest city in Crete that attracts many tourists. Built on the 5th century BC by the beach has changed a lot of hands, all leaving the signs of their culture. It is one of the best survived Venetian cities in Greece.

7. Fodele - Rethimno - Agia Triada - Chania

Fodele is the village of El Greco (Dominikos Thetokopoulos) one of the most important artists of the 16th century. He is considered precursor of the modern art. His house in Fodele is today a museum.
